Maintaining A White Smile…With Food?

Using Twilight Teeth is a fantastic way to whiten your teeth in the salon or at home. To help keep your teeth white between applications, you should try adding some of  the following foods to you diet.

Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain. This enzyme can naturally remove stains from your teeth by separating plaque from the surface of the tooth (or disrupting the proteins on the surface of enamel), plus it can reduce inflammation. Then your saliva naturally washes the stains away, resulting in healthier and whiter teeth. Other foods that contain bromelain are papaya and oranges.

Strawberries contain an enzyme called malic acid. This is another enzyme that can naturally whiten your teeth by acting as a natural astringent to remove surface discoloration, or acts as a bleaching agent. Malic acid is essential in dissolving superficial stains on the surface of teeth and increases saliva production. Another food item that contains malic acid is apples.

Dairy, such as yogurt and cheese, is a great way to naturally whiten your smile as it causes your mouth to produce excess saliva and contains lactic acid. The extra saliva helps to break down enamel stains while the lactic acid can naturally whiten your teeth by helping to dissolve those surface teeth stains.

Other foods that increase saliva production are broccoli, carrots, celery, and cauliflower. They’re difficult to chew, so as you grind them up, the veggies strip superficial stains from the surface of your teeth. And the longer you chew the more saliva the mouth produces, which helps to break down stains.

Seeds and nuts can work as exfoliants for your teeth. Their abrasive texture can actually strip stains from your enamel, buffing away discoloration and whitening the surface of teeth. Good ones to naturally whiten your teeth are sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, and cashews. Another food item that is a good exfoliator is apples.

Water can help prevent stains from forming on your teeth. Simply swish a mouthful around after eating or drinking pigment-rich foods and beverages to help keep your smile whiter. Then swallow, just like saliva it will naturally wash the stains away. For best results drink flat, or still, water, do not consume sparkling, or bubbly, water which will increase the chances of tooth surface erosion.

Shiitake Mushrooms contain lentinan, which is a type of sugar that does not promote tooth decay. Lentinan naturally prevents plaque-building bacteria from building up in your mouth, thus making it more difficult for stains to “stick” to your teeth. Other foods that contain lentinan are garlic and broccoli sprouts.

Onions contain sulfur compounds called thiosulfinates which is great at reducing the production of plaque. This compound can naturally keep plaque from forming on and in between your teeth. Eating raw onions releases this bacteria-reducing compound, eating cooked onions won’t help to naturally whiten your teeth.
